Please describe your relevant analytical skills. | I am trained as a lawyer, and have applied those analytical skills for over forty years. I know how to work with spreadsheets, and with people. |
Please describe your ability to be impartial. | I served as a hearing examiner for the Pharmacy Board and Medical Board, formerly the Medical Examiner's Board, before the creation of SOAH. Impartiality, and being able to set aside personal opinion, is critical to serving as a judge. |
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. | I have been a resident of Austin, with two brief lapses, since 1968. I have seen the city grow from a sleepy college town to a dynamic and booming metropolis. I have personally witnessed the changes that brought the first African American and Hispanic members of the City Council and the County Commissioner's Court, and lately have led to the gentrification of East Austin and South Austin. Although I am Anglo, in my work as a lawyer I have represented folks of widely varying ethnicities, from all over the City and from every walk of life. I love Austin. |
Please provide your employment history. | I have been self-employed since 1984. Before that, I worked as a lawyer in private practice for a small civil law firm, and for the Attorney General of Texas. Prior to law school, I worked for seven years as a radio disc jockey and announcer. |
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. | I have been politically involved since I came to Austin. I have served as a precinct chair, attended County and State political conventions as a Democrat. I have also served on volunteer Boards (PTA, Dance Umbrella, Zach Scott, etc.) and Commissions (most recently the Courthouse Commission) with folks who have very different political and social orientations from my own. In order to build consensus in such situations, and get things done, it is important to be able to listen, and necessary to be able to view things from the perspective of others. I enjoy doing that. |
