Please describe your relevant analytical skills. In 2018-2019, I represented the City of Austin on two real estate transaction matters. I was engaged through City legal. These matters are not ongoing.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. I believe that all persons in the City of Austin are legally entitled to EQUAL representation under the law. I strong believe the correlation between voter participation and the perception of equal representation is real. I also believe that the large population of renters in Austin need to be represented and encouraged to participate in the election processes. I have lived in two distinctly different areas of the same District (10) and see how different communities within the same District have different concerns and needs. Throughout my legal career, I have represented various types of clients - for profit, non-profit and pro bono - and I have represented each client with the same level of zealous representation and remained impartial. While this is my duty as a lawyer, I believe this gives me context as to why impartiality is mandatory in a situation like this.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. I have learned a great deal about diversity and social equities by serving on the Mayor's Task Force on Institutional Racism and Systemic Inequities (real estate subcommittee). Through participation on this Task Force and review of other sources, I understand Austin's history of creating policies that disenfranchise individuals and I stand committed to make sure that, as our City grows, we work to correct these past indiscretions and injustices and create voting districts that provide equal representation and acknowledge the history that needs to be corrected and not repeated.
Please provide your employment history. I have been a practicing attorney in Dallas, Washington, DC, and Austin for 19 years. I have represented a variety of clients of all sizes (from individuals, non-profits, small businesses, banks, and institutional clients). I am a proud parent of 2 AISD students (incoming 4th grader at Bryker Woods Elementary and incoming 8th grader at O'Henry Middle School). I value diversity, having graduated from Little Rock Central High being only one generation removed from the crisis in 1957; I understand that we as a community owe a duty to ensure that all citizens from all socio-demographic, ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds and circumstances deserve equal treatment and equal representation. 10-1 Single Member Districts can be used as a tool to realize equal representation or to inhibit it. I want to be a part of this Commission to ensure that Districts are redrawn in the best interests of all Austinites-especially taking into account the most vulnerable in our society.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. I would like to make it known that my education has included civil rights history and tools to work to better race relations. From an early age this has been a high priority for me.
