Please describe your relevant analytical skills. My current skill base is rooted in demographic analysis to help predict sales for Whole Foods Market. This involves multiple Geographic Information System tools and combining those with the right data. I have experience in Esri, Mapinfo, and Alteryx for heavy lifting in GIS work. I also have been a part of multiple projects within our company to deploy and utilize new modeling tools to better understand which demographics are well suited for new locations. This also involves work within excel and other analytical tools to take modeling outputs and present them in a well-reasoned and concise summaries to executive decision makers. I am very adapt at solving tough problems and using GIS to create solutions that can be put to work for various purposes. We look at demographic data daily and I think my skills could really help us make a data driven and quality decision so that our districts represent the city of Austin well.

Please describe your ability to be impartial. I've always prided myself in being able to have reasonable conversations across the political and belief spectrum. I certainly have convictions and while they are something I carry with me, I believe that data is one of the most important things we can use to create informed and unbiased geographic boundaries to equally represent our constituents. I have a strong desire to make sure every group is well represented in my city and I see this opportunity as a way to facilitate fairness across the board.

Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. I appreciate Austin's geography and history tremendously. Having been born in Texas, Austin was always my goal. I made it here in 2002 and have enjoyed watching it grow. It's been my home for all but 6 months since 2002. Even when I moved away, I couldn't stay away. While I believe our city is diverse and provides a good home to a lot of people, I recognize that we have a duty to ensure all groups are well represented in our local government. Our history of segregation along with geographic boundaries over the years have lead some groups to be under represented. It's my hope that we can use data and reason to make sure the diverse city we have is well represented at Council.
Please provide your employment history. I've been in the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) field for approximately 14 years. I started as an Intern at the City of Austin in 2006. Since then I have held private and public jobs with a focus in geography. Some of those jobs focused on environmental impacts of development and highway projects. Others were positions that helped citizens determine their homes' FEMA flood plain status. However, my most recent and current position is the one that I think provides me with the most relevant analytical skill base. For almost the last 10 years, I've provided demographic insights, maintained GIS data, and helped build systems to help Whole Foods predict sales and determine best locations for new stores. As referenced above, demographic information is the world I live in and we are constantly looking for new and better ways to understand the demographics of the areas around our stores and potential new stores. I really believe my multiple years of GIS in various industries provide me with a unique skill set and experience that can help guide the city in a thoughtful and data-driven way.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. I love Austin. Having been here for so long, it's truly become my home. I've always wanted to be a part of the direction our city heads. Outside of voting, I never really saw an opportunity to lend my skills to that decision making. This commission seems like a great way for me to take my skills in GIS and my passion for government and political science to start making a bigger impact on my community.
