Please describe your relevant analytical skills. As a current student, I have to use analytical skills on a daily basis in order to problem solve, research, and communicate effectively. I hold an Associate of Arts Degree in Geography from Austin Community College and I am currently a Sustainability Studies major at the University of Texas at Austin. As a liberal arts major and geography student, I have had to digest heavy and often complex materials with great attention to detail, including local and regional maps and texts about various global cultures. I recently completed two classes in Geographic Information Systems which involved several weeks of map-making and performing location analysis. I have also taken multiple courses in mathematics, which has helped me to be a more well-rounded student and strengthen my attention to detail and the ability to problem-solve. As part of my degree, I have taken several courses in English composition, literature, and language, which have strengthened my ability to communicate, As a member of the Austin Community College Student Government Association, I participated in workshops in conflict resolution, allowing me to become a more effective communicator.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. During my time at Austin Community College, I was a member of various student organizations which required me to reach out to students of all backgrounds and belief systems. I was involved in nonpartisan efforts to promote civic life on campus including serving in the student government association (ACC SGA). As a member of ACC SGA, I had to work closely with students on all ends of the political spectrum. I found that we often had common values and goals including holding fundraisers and volunteering in support of the underprivileged, and collaborating as part of committees to improve student access to campus resources for greater health and wellbeing. I am currently a Volunteer Deputy Registrar (VDR) and in previous years, I have done voter registration at various venues including cultural festivals and movie theaters. This is part of the nonpartisan effort to grant every American the right to vote in order to guarantee fair elections, and I am proud to be a part of such an initiative. I plan on helping out with early voting and election day events on UT campus this fall.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. As a born-and-raised Austinite and student who has studied at various ACC campuses, I have had the opportunity to explore various corners of our unique and beautiful city. Austin is the fourth largest city in Texas but also the fastest-growing major city in the nation, which means that understanding the needs of the diverse populace is of utmost importance. The Colorado River is a prominent feature of the natural landscape of our city which has allowed us as residents to enjoy the natural beauty of reservoirs like Lake Austin, Lake Travis, and Lady Bird Lake, which can be found right in the heart of downtown Austin. From the bustle of downtown Austin with its rapidly growing tech industry to the rich culture of East Austin to the breathtaking view from Mount Bonnell, it is no wonder that Austin is a popular destination for young professionals and families alike. More than one-third of Austin’s demographic is classified as Hispanic and Latinx culture, cuisine, and language have been a part of my learning experience as a proud resident of this great city. I love to explore the nuances of racial and cultural identity and study how these concepts can be respected and meaningfully incorporated into city policies.
Please provide your employment history. Currently, I am finishing up a job as a member of Austin Community College’s Census Complete Count Committee. Over the past few months, I have contacted several hundred ACC students in order to encourage them to complete the census, which is instrumental in providing the necessary community resources that our communities need. This has been a very rewarding experience and I am glad to have had the opportunity to be involved in this very important cause. I have also had jobs in customer service including working as a cashier at H-E-B and Central Market, as well as working at the Frank Erwin Center during both music and sporting events. I am currently a temporary worker at Instacart. These jobs have allowed me to interact with and solve issues regarding people of all ages, genders, and abilities. I believe that such jobs have made me a better communicator and a more empathetic and patient individual. I have also gained more appreciation for various cuisines and artists in our city.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. I am a great believer in addressing the needs of various populations in order to create a more equitable, safe, and healthy society. I believe that serving on the Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission will allow me to practice what I have learned as a geography and sustainability student while also learning from and working with a diverse team. I have always loved the civic process and I believe that my experience regarding bipartisan political efforts makes me a strong candidate for the commission. I have a great appreciation for my hometown’s unique geography and demographics and I believe that serving on this committee would be a true honor and privilege. I understand that the pandemic presents a unique but solvable challenge to the way in which the commission may operate, and I am able and willing to help in the process. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. I look forward to the opportunity to assist in this historic and pivotal process for the betterment of our city. Thank you for your time and consideration.
