Please describe your relevant analytical skills. I am a data analyst with a nonprofit that focuses on criminal justice reform. I work with large datasets that often require extensive cleaning and formatting prior to use, and I frequently have to match records across data from different sources. My analysis typically focuses on finding ways to reduce the harmful impacts of involvement in the justice system, particularly for women and people of color. I also use data to project the operational and fiscal impacts of proposed policy and legislative changes. I am very accustomed to explaining complex analysis in layperson terms, both verbally and through graphics. I also have experience gathering and analyzing census data and can create maps using Tableau.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. Being impartial is critical to data analysis - I can have my own beliefs or ideas about something, but I can't let my beliefs cause me to overlook or ignore crucial information. I try to avoid this by being as transparent as possible when I present my findings - what data was included/excluded, how were categories defined, etc. In my job, I have also been asked to review published articles to verify that the conclusions drawn were supported by the analysis. I think this is important to do, especially when those conclusions sound "right" to me; assuming something is correct simply because it supports what you already think is a dangerous path.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. I have lived in the Austin area for over 15 years, in various parts of town but mostly in south Austin and on the east side. While I wish that Austin was less racially segregated, I have come to appreciate the uniqueness of each part of town and the people who live there - as well as the unique needs of each part of town. I have seen how moving towards equal representation in city hall with the 10-1 city council has changed the politics of Austin for the better, but I have also seen how gentrification and the rising cost of living has eclipsed some of that progress. I want to make sure that each unique part of Austin has equal access to resources and representation.

Developed and prepared complex statistical and written reports, to include interpretations, conclusions, and recommendations, for managerial team to aid in decisions regarding programming; Performed basic and advanced statistical analysis procedures to compile and analyze information for use by department management, local officials, and state agencies; Translated complex statistical procedures and results into non-technical language for presentations to management and other department staff; Served as liaison in various department workgroups, including strategic planning and grant development and procurement, with a focus on generating statistics to support the goals and objectives.
