Please describe your relevant analytical skills. My professional experience consists of analytical roles in the past 10 years. I am adept at financial, budget, accounting, and staffing analysis as part of my core functions. I currently work in the financial planning and analysis team which takes me into financial analysis, but also corporate strategy. I am highly focused on data-driven decision making utilizing internal as well as external data sources to make recommendations to senior management. I prepare the findings but also present them to executive audiences. My experience not only has taught me how to analyze information, but also navigate situations and relationships for which I have led high level and cross-divisional projects. Although my decision making is driven by data and facts, I do not forget that behind all the data and figures are people and lives that could be affected by the commission’s decisions. I am recognized as a future leader and why my company invests in my education and development (Decision Quality classes, Tableau Conference, 7 Habits of highly effective people seminar, and other analytic/strategic thinking courses).
Please describe your ability to be impartial. I take pride in my ability to be impartial and is why I have succeeded in analytical roles with progressively larger responsibilities. It is my ability to be impartial that makes me a good analyst because I focus on facts to drive my decision making not only at work but in my personal life. I seek out different viewpoints and continually educate myself to make me a more learned and engaged family member, friend, worker, and citizen. I treat everyone with respect because I live by the motto of treating others as I would like to be treated. I am good at empathizing with people because I put myself in other’s shoes and seek experiences and viewpoints different from my own.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. As an Austin resident since I moved here in 2004 to attend and graduate from UT, I have grown to appreciate Austin’s diverse demographics and geography and can think of no other place as my home. It is this diversity different from my hometown of El Paso, that keeps me here. It is this access to a rich cultural history and arts that make this such a great place to live. I take pride in what my city has to offer and the promising future I want to be a part of planning. I make an effort to enjoy Austin’s varied geography and I am also aware of the history that has led to the way the city looks today and will look tomorrow. My commitment to my community is why I am applying to be part of the commission to help in the pursuit of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Please provide your employment history. Senior Business Operations Analyst – Texas Mutual Insurance Company – Austin, TX 2018-Present Business Operations Analyst - Hospital Housekeeping Systems - Austin, TX 2014-2018 Budget Analyst - Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) – Austin, TX 2011-2013 Small Business Development Specialist – United States Peace Corps - Peru, South America 2009-2011
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. My experience in the Peace Corps in Peru gave me a new level of appreciation for service to one’s country and the worldwide community. This taught me of the rewards of personal sacrifice to try to make a difference in the lives of others that might not have been afforded the opportunities that I have had. As a son of immigrant parents and a first-generation college student I too have had to find my path and seek teachers and mentors along the way, but always with the mindset that if I don’t speak up for myself, no one else will. My having lived in 4 countries has also taught me about the need and beauty of the diversity of people, thought, culture, and working together for common causes.
