Please describe your relevant analytical skills. My background with Geographic Information Systems allows me to view mapping and census data from any number of metrics and overlays. I feel empowered by the skills I've gained in GIS in my ability to extract real data and provide a visual platform for which the public can both query and make their own decisions. Gerrymandering is means of suppressing the people's voice. GIS is a tool to fight that abuse.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. I believe that everyone has their own truth; that mine is not reality. I practice patience, tolerance, understanding and strive to listen to peoples’ perspectives. I often find enlightenment in being open to others’ ideas.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. I was born in Austin and have lived here 95% of my life. I have seen it in it's entirety in that time through my work, from multi-million dollar homes, to cleaning up trash and handing out bags to the homeless under 7th & IH35. I have worked the land of leaders in our tech industry, and mentored my employees of all ethnicities who have been reincarcerated for absconding, or being homeless while on probation. I've seen humanity and humility (and learned the same) in all arenas across these demographics and geographies.
Please provide your employment history. My current position is with Travis County Parks Land Management Program, as a Land Management Technician. My work on prescribed fires and obtaining wildland firefighting qualifications has allowed me to strengthen my interpersonal skills in working on teams to achieve goals set forth on each prescribed fire. I have also had the opportunity to employ my GIS skills to map some of our properties with respect to their stewardship, and begin to work with my work group on how we want to capture that data to reach our program goals. This team building and interpersonal communication, alongside my GIS background, is helpful when working in a group towards change. General skills I also have include Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Access and Publisher. GIS skills include ArcGIS Desktop, Pro, Collector, and Survey123 Connect. I have been with Travis County Parks for about 2.5 years, working as a Maintenance Worker before my current position, but my prior career was in Landscaping and Arboriculture. As a certified arborist and landscaper, aside from the general administration skills necessary for client and interoffice communications, report generations and so on, the greatest skills I gained were my knowledge of the city at large, and the people within it. The people I’ve gotten to know and interact with through networking have been my greatest asset. I’ve learned and achieved more through my contacts with other arborists and landscapers than I ever would alone. I continue to maintain and grow my arborist certifications through the International Society of Arboriculture. Peripherally, I’m a Capitol Area Master Naturalist, and maintain my certification through volunteer opportunities within the Austin Community. My current focus while volunteer opportunities have been slowed or halted has been with the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee, as we look for barriers that inhibit accessibility of nature programs to various portions of our community, and what role environmental (in)justice has played in that.
