Please describe your relevant analytical skills. The nature of my profession (IT) requires me to take large issues and examine them from a multitude of perspectives. I lead teams of people through this process. We apply reason, do analysis, and come up with creative solutions to deliver the optimal resolution. I do this personally. I also lead people through this process “at scale”. In addition to the tactical skill of understanding how to apply analytical skills, I am very familiar with constructing governance models to prioritize or work in IT. The budget scale I am familiar working with is in the billions. I recognize and appreciate the value of the process. The need to be transparent and ensure prioritization parity for all parties is critical to the work I do. The commission’s operating model is very similar to the work I currently do. We define our objectives, draft an initial plan of approach. We vet those models with the wider organizations. After aggregating the feedback, we conduct final reviews and implement the model.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. Impartiality is a critical element to developing a governance model. A predisposition by any architect of the governance model will comprise the ability to create an egalitarian system. With respect to my work, much of my time is spent fixing issues created by people “gaming” the system to get access to budget and resources. Each issue can generally root cause back to an imbalance expressed by the initial architect. A council person must understand that any impartiality will become evident quickly. They must also understand they will be required to fix it. Any impartiality will show itself as soon as the model is active. In addition to the functional requirement for impartiality, it is a more and ethical responsibility. The commission will set the rules of engagement for all the citizens. It is morally imprudent to consider any of the constituents above any others.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. I have lived in 5 countries. Many of them were less diverse than Austin. I have seen first hand the weakness in a singular mindset. As a leader in a large global company and the leader of a diversity organization, I believe strongly in the strength of diversity. The benefits of diversity are both tangible and intangible. From a tangible perspective, inclusion ensures a wealth of thought and perspectives. Applying this to the governance model ensures that the business of the people represents and reflects that diversity of thought. From a tangible perspective, Austin diversity is the richness that people travel from all around the world to experience. They come here for our culture and our geography. Any governance model that comprises the delicate balance of that has organically grown here comprises the future of our city.

Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. I am passionate about the development of sound governance models. My work and effectiveness are deeply impacted by situations created by bad governance. I believe in the system of government we have in the US and Austin. I understand its beauty better than many because I have lived in places without transparent government or with disparity in the constituency. I believe strongly in the strength of diversity. I am committed this and spend considerable time leading a diversity committee and organization at work. I have been mailing in my ballots over the years. I am happy to be back in Austin so I can make a difference directly.
