Please describe your relevant analytical skills. Having taught more than 50 years in the UT English Department, I have assessed, evaluated, and judged thousands of students and their written and oral work. As numerous students have told me, my efforts have enhanced their analytical skills, critical thinking, writing and communication abilities. I have also assessed and judged hundreds of colleagues for promotion and salary review, fellowships, teaching and research awards, as well as numerous employment applicants at departmental, college, and University levels.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. I have always endeavored to evaluate and judge my students (as well as colleagues) strictly and fairly on the quality of their work and their improvement. Despite not being a grade inflator, I have had virtually no student complaints about my judgment of their work and my assessment fairness.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. As the state capitol and with its high-tech industry, diverse demographics, beautiful natural setting, lively cultural scene, and high quality of life for most though not all, Austin is a unique city in many ways. Unfortunately, it is also increasingly a victim of its success in terms of urban sprawl, high congestion, lack of adequate public transportation, a declining ethnic population, and rampant gentrification that is driving many away from the central city and into nearby towns or further.
Please provide your employment history. I have taught in UT’s English Department for over 50 years, with occasional visiting teaching positions in England, Ireland, and France. So I have both a long-term investment in Austin and a demonstrated success in working well in other cultural contexts. I have successfully mentored many of my students in their courses of study, theses and dissertations, and graduate school and job applications.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. I was a founding member and first president of the Allandale Neighborhood Association. I have chaired numerous standing committees at the University, including Faculty Rules and Governance, Parking and Traffic, Academic Freedom & Responsibility, Budget Advisory, and Grievance, as well as the Faculty Senate and Faculty Council; and I currently serve as Secretary of the General Faculty. I established and long coordinated numerous international faculty exchange programs, my department’s Oxford Summer Program, and an undergraduate program dedicated to performing Shakespeare. On the state level, I have served on the Higher Ed Coordinating Board Faculty Advisory Committee, the UT System Faculty Advisory Council, and as President of the Central Texas Fulbright and AAUP chapters. Nationally, I have served on several Fulbright Advisory Committees; chaired the AAUP committee on governance and served on its National Council; and been elected to the Modern Language Association Delegate Assembly.
