Please describe your relevant analytical skills. | I have expertise in computation and analytical methods, with a strong focus in statistics. I taught a 1-week course in scientific computation at least 50 times in the last 9 years to students with a wide range of abilities. I am used to explaining complex topics to laypeople. |
Please describe your ability to be impartial. | In my current role, I manage an overseas account with many stakeholders from a different culture. I often find myself at the intersection of competing interests and have to find a common middle ground. I have a lot of experience working with customers who cannot exactly articulate their needs and opinions; I use a method of asking questions to draw out the root of a problem or need. This often requires me to represent and sometimes argue a point which is not my own personally. |
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. | I was born and grew up in Austin. I grew up near the university, where my parents hosted college students from around the world. In addition, my church community has been diverse, across ethnic and socioeconomic lines. I am anglo, but many of my friends in my youth have been hispanic and asian, and I spent many of my summers at Bartholomew Pool, during which time I definitely mixed with and made friends with a different demographic than lived in my north university neighborhood. I spent some years in New England for graduate school and then five years in South Carolina. On returning to Austin, I had a new appreciation for the diverse community I grew up in. |
Please provide your employment history. | I am in my 10th year at Enthought, Inc, an Austin-based company that specializes in scientific computing. For years, I worked as a scientific software developer, in which role I became familiar with many of the methods one would use to do statistical analysis. In addition, I have established a substantial network of experts who could be a resource in the methods of analyzing geographic information. |
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. | I’m very bothered by the partisan practice of Gerrymandering, and I would love to bring a voice of fairness to the redistricting process. I love to work in a creative conflict mode; I am open to changing my mind about ideas, if they are well-argued. I look forward to being an active and constructive member of the Independent Citizen’s Redistricting Commision. |
