Please describe your relevant analytical skills. I am trained both as a lawyer and public administrator. In my current job, I have to analyze hard data like statistics and anecdotal information (customer interviews, etc..) to determine the best path forward for the business. I also have experience with trying to find proxy statistics for information that is not readily available in order to make informed decisions.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. In my current job, I have to remain impartial and make decisions that work for the best of the company, regardless of my personal opinions. I think the same skills would need to be applied to this position. The data presented to the commission and the input given by citizens at public meetings will have to guide the decision making. I would view my role as representing those opinions, not my own.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. I grew up in a rural small town where white and black families did not associate with each other. As I attended college and moved away, first to New York City and now to Austin, I came to appreciate the importance of living in a diverse city. The opinions and beliefs of people from all different races and socioeconomic groups makes cities stronger . It's important to me to live in a diverse neighborhood and send my children to a diverse school. Austin has a vibrant arts and music scene that wouldn't be possible without this diversity. As I see Austin becoming less diverse due to cost of living, I worry about the city losing that vibrancy that comes with being a diverse place.
Please provide your employment history. I was an attorney for Kelly Legal Services for 4 years, which required me to analyze documents for relevancy to litigation. I was also a Program Manger for Energy Efficiency Programs for 4 years. Managing these programs required me to define and follow budget plans, analyze program data to make sure we were tracking towards our program goals, and manage 6 employees. In my current role as a Senior Product Manager, I have to synthesize inputs from internal and external stakeholders, user data, and high level company strategy to determine a path forward for the product. This role is very similar to the work that would need to be done on the commission, taking all of this data and coming to an objective decision.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. I am a transplant to Austin from rural Louisiana, by way of New York City and a few stops in between. My experience living in New York taught me a lot about the value of diversity and preserving the character of a city. I hope that I'll have the opportunity to bring that experience along with my education and work experience to help the City of Austin.
