Please describe your relevant analytical skills. I was a practicing attorney for 30 years. Law is all about analyzing facts and circumstances in order to determine applicable laws and assess probable results of various courses of action.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. There are a lot of things about which I cannot be impartial. However, when a task requires a decision based on facts, I am able to set aside my personal preferences regarding what the decision should be. I have been a part of numerous interview boards where I was personally acquainted with one or more of the applicants, but I assessed their responses to board questions by the same criteria I used for all other applicants.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. The virtually all-white neighborhood in which I bought my house 20+ years ago has gradually evolved into a home for people of many ethnicities and nationalities, and we have all benefitted from this development. As is true of many cities, Austin's geography has too often been used as a means of exclusion rather than inclusion.
Please provide your employment history. 1984-2000 Attorney, Texas Youth Commission (now Texas Juvenile Justice Dept) - Conducted parole violation hearings, requiring discovery of relevant facts in the framework of applicable law and agency policy. Drafted policies regarding youth discipline and grievance procedures, requiring synthesis of divergent programmatic and practical goals. Analyzed proposed legislation and incorporated new legislation into existing policies and procedures, requiring the ability to conceptualize how various factors would impact existing processes. 2000-2014 Attorney, Texas Dept. of Public Safety - Supervised responses to requests for public records, requiring daily interaction with the public. Coordinated agency defense of lawsuits with the AG's office, requiring knowledge of applicable law and attention to every detail. Advised supervisors regarding discipline of employees, requiring a balancing of supervisor goals, applicable law, and agency policy.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. I have lived in Austin for roughly 30 years and have always been politically interested but never, for various reasons, politically active. I think Austin is at a tipping point, and I would like to do my part to ensure that everyone has a fair opportunity to make their voice heard regarding the city's future.
