Please describe your relevant analytical skills. I received a Bachelor’s of Arts in Architecture from the University of New Mexico and a Master of Architecture from Yale University. As an architect I am well versed and trained in aspects of city planning, development and understanding the complex needs of diverse populations. I am trained at analyzing complex programs and managing design outcomes taking ideas and what-ifs to tangible realities. I also have the skills to understand and read plans and data seeing what future growth trends are while understanding the history and past of Cities. Especially important in Austin where in the past the city was planned with racist intent and segregation. I am the mother of three young children and have been actively involved in AISD at a grassroots level. I am a big proponent of equity and strive to look at all I do with an equity lens.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. I am from a mixed background with two Hispanic grandmothers and two white grandfathers. I identify as white but with Hispanic heritage. My pronouns are She/her/hers. I have two dyslexic children and understand aspects of Neurodiversity. I don’t have an agenda except wanting my kids to grow up in a city that is equitable with equitable representation. Through equity training I have been learning to question assumptions and listen rather than speak. I believe I can add positively to the conversation and be assertive when required.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. I chose to move to Austin in 2006 because I saw a creative, diverse city that valued education, music and understood the importance of preserving outdoor space and cultural heritage. Since living here I have become well versed in a different side of Austin. One with a racist past and current systemic racism, rapid expansion, lack of affordable housing options, transportation issues but despite all the problems there is still a fierce love of this city by those who live here and those that move here daily. Austin is an amazing city, with amazing opportunity and potential as long as all are recognized.
Please provide your employment history. For the last ten years I have owned a small business in Austin Clark Richardson Architects. I currently serve as a committee member at Preservation Austin. I have been a licensed architect in the state of Texas for 12 years. I have been a LEED professional (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) For 13 years. I have been an adjunct professor at the University of New Mexico and UT Austin teaching in both undergraduate and graduate programs at the Schools of Architecture and Planning. I worked with Ed Mazria at the inception of Architecture 2030, a sustainability non-profit responsible for the changes in the energy code that is currently adopted by the City of Austin. And last but certainly not least I am a mom, wife, sister and daughter.
