Please describe your relevant analytical skills. My personal and professional experiences have required an aptitude for complex problem solving, management of projects both large and small, and deducing meaningful observations from a variety of data sets. My professional life has been spent largely in the energy industry, with particular focus on the financing, operation and management of energy assets. I also served with the Public Utilities Commission of TX, where I worked in Rate Regulation to interpret and implement complex rate-making standards. In my personal life, I am a single homeowner who independently manages my home (finances, repairs/maintenance, etc.) in East Austin, and I have embarked upon, solely on my own, two successful renovations in the 7 years I have owned it.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. I pride myself on my independence and my ability to make decisions based solely on my morals, reason and education. I enjoy the chance to assimilate in a whole host of different environments, and believe that one can learn much from exposing oneself to others' viewpoints. I believe that everyone is entitled to their opinion (as I am), and each person's voice is worth the same as everyone else's. Given this, I try my best to avoid the impression of my beliefs on others unless it is welcome and have resolved to the fact that sometimes we must 'agree to disagree'. I think this allows me to engage with a wide variety of individuals because I have the ability to set my beliefs aside in order to listen and hear others' points of view. As a result, I feel like I'm able to be as impartial as a human being can be, all things considered.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. I have lived in and visited a lot of places all over the US and the world and I truly value my exposure to cultures and perspectives different from my own. My father is a Cuban refugee, and my Cuban influenced upbringing, paired with more traditional 'white American' upbringing contributed by my mother, truly broadened my appreciation for what both cultures have to offer. Nearly 7 years ago when I bought my home, I was drawn to live in East Austin because, to me, it offered at least some of the diversity and eclecticism I craved (and learned to love when I lived in Washington, DC and overseas). I love East Austin because it represents a melting pot of different races, cultures and socioeconomic statuses. I embrace the diverse contributions in art, music and food, and find myself most comfortable here. I also am quite active and love to enjoy the outdoors. I take frequent trips to the hill country and hit the Lady Bird Lake trail almost daily, and truly enjoy the access we have to spaces that allow me to embrace nature and the beautiful scenery that Texas has to offer.
Please provide your employment history. After graduating from the University of Virginia with a BA in Economics, I worked in Washington DC as a contractor for the Department of Energy. My focus was to support the establishment, growth and operation of the Loan Guarantee Program, which sought to provide financing support for nascent, greenhouse gas reducing technologies (solar, wind, biomass, etc.). I then attended the University of Texas McCombs School of Business and graduated with an MBA. After graduation, I worked for SunPower in the operations and asset management group, and oversaw the financing contracts on large portfolios of solar installations on behalf of institutional investor/customers. I've also worked as a public servant for the Public Utilities Commission of TX in the Rate Regulation division, and supported the rate-making process for the multitude of utilities in Texas. I now work for RWE Renewables as an investment analyst and support the process by which the company vets and makes a business case for or against the investment in proposed wind projects.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. I think I could bring a very unique, educated and even-keel perspective to the commission. I have thrived in my career as a result of my comfort with numbers and the observations one can gather from them. And regardless of what I think or might want to see, based on my own predilections, I have a keen ability to accept results when facts support them. I also love the Austin communities I've become a part of over the past 11 years, and I would love to be a positive force for these communities and the greater Austin community. Austin has become my beloved home, and I want to find a way to give back and help it continue to thrive.
