Please describe your relevant analytical skills. Quantitative researcher; policy research training; published scholar in education research
Please describe your ability to be impartial. As a department chair at UT-Austin (3 years), I regularly conduct assessments of faculty members in promotion and tenure cases. This requires me to objectively and impartially evaluate candidates for their worthiness to promotion. I also regularly conduct external reviews of other faculty candidates across the country, at top tier universities. These experiences, along with my skills as a policy researcher, provide salient examples of my ability to be impartial as a potential commissioner.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. I have lived and worked in Austin for 23 years of my adult life. I met my wife here, my son was born here, and I have worked for decades in our community to improve educational opportunities for those less fortunate. This is an enriching place to raise a family, but it is also full of complexities and challenges. From poverty, to segregation, to gentrification, to policing, to healthcare gaps, the challenges in this growing region abound. With that said, what I appreciate most about the City of Austin is the potential to overcome these challenges. We have so much intellectual energy here, so much economic opportunity, so much entrepreneurship, and so much creativity. These "natural advantages" within our Capitol city give me hope that Austin will see better days ahead. But we can only seize on this "potential" if our local government can truly be representative of the growing diversity of voices and perspectives that make up our fair city.
Please provide your employment history. Professor & Department Chair, UT-Austin College of Education (2007 to current)
