Please describe your relevant analytical skills. Over the past 10 years I've worked for nonpartisan civic engagement organizations focused on reaching underserved and hard to reach communities. I have a deep understanding of the Latino community in particular and think my background would be an asset to ensure all our communities are fairly represented in local government.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. Having worked for a 501 c3, I know how important it is to remain impartial and nonpartisan when working to engage the larger community. It is this ability to be impartial that allows for trust in our systems and processes. Although I have worked in politics, I've never worked for a candidate or specific campaign, precisely because I feel impartial and unbiased outreach is most needed in communities to regain trust in our government and political systems.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. Having been here before and after the city went from an at-large council to 10 districts, I've seen a marked change in the way diverse communities are represented in local government. From token representation to meaningful representation that seeks to uplift constituent concerns, the city of Austin has done very important work in moving towards a more representative government. That said, Austin is the only major growing city to have a diminishing Black population, and I believe more needs to be done to represent, protect and uplift that community.
Please provide your employment history. I've worked at local Austin businesses (about 2 years at the Hispanic agency formerly known as LatinWorks, now Third Ear), while also spending close to 10 years working for Voto Latino, most recently as COO. While at Voto Latino I led our biggest voter engagement programs, corporate partnerships, and also brought our national conference right here to Austin at UT where we trained hundreds of young people on basics of civic engagement and leadership. I also helped work on our 2010 and 2020 census campaigns to engage people in the important task of being counted. All of which I think are useful in serving on this commission.
