Please describe your relevant analytical skills. My career has allowed me to utilize my skill set in research as well as solving complex problems making them simple to understand. I have found that this skill allows me to alleviate problems that may be perceived as existent before they even arrive. I and provide dignity and honor to all involved problems. Further, I am able to interpret and inform decision-makers and recipients of the outcomes with compassion, concern, and authenticity. As a critical thinker, I use skills to resolve differences by keeping facts and feelings in their appropriate places. understanding that difference is good and that difference can co-exist in peace and health.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. My Stepson, colleagues, and staff all share that I am rational as I engage in clear and sensible thinking. They refer to me as "Ms. Friday, " the facts." I examine both sides of an issue before forming an opinion. I keep the decision and my personal biases separate from the situation. Should I find that I have a bias I am quick to inform and defer to other team members to make certain my input and influence is always pure. Finally, I am selfless as I always ask what is in it for the community or us.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. I remember moving to Austin, January 15, 1993, Micheal Jordon had retired from basketball, did not do well in baseball tryouts and every one of my friends both professional and personal, but especially professional around the country were "jealous" of my move to Austin. What I did not know was that there were only 6% African -American in the City and no African -American leaders. Further, while there were many Latino descents, there were no Latino leaders in the city. I emersed myself in understanding Austin's history. As a result of my community involvement, I was a participant in giving birth to, "the quality of Life Survey for the African -Americans in Austin, which also led to the same studies for other cultures, i.e. Quality of Hispanic Life in Austin.
Please provide your employment history. My work with the City of Austin Police Department (15 years ago) has allowed me to outreach to the community as a Community Liasion. My Work as Senior Director of Volunteer Services for Dell Children's' Medical Center and Banner Health in Tucson, Arizona, allowed me to develop community programs that supported unserved communities and provided a change in the areas of health to those same communities.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. My community involvement manifested itself as a commission for the Animal Rights Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission, and the Women's Commission, all of which I served faithfully and kept the community I served informed of our successes and areas need improvement. My work with the Mary Lee Foundation as a founding member of Servants of Hope, a group that supports spiritual work to those with disabilities. One of my most proud accomplishments. As a member of Urban League Guild and Vice President, I work in the community to support those with need in the Austin Area, whether handicapped support at their homes, roofs, education, and wheelchair ramps for those in need. As a founding member of Eastside Story After School technology camp, I supported education enhancement via computers and homework support for 15 area middle schools. I still smile when I reflect on my award by the Austin Business Journal as a Women of Power and Distinction. Getting recognized for something I would do for free. My Work with the NAACP, Asian Chamber, LuLac, and the Social Justice League and the University of Texas Community Advisory Committee has allowed me to bring and view diverse concerns and interests; navigating them so that Austin continues to grow rich in valuing the many cultural renderings as gifts to ourselves. Finally my 48-year commitment to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorotity, Inc., A 110-year-old African- American sorority, that works to serve the communities in which they live, via, tutoring, food banks, and community health and college entry.
