Please describe your relevant analytical skills. My analytical skills have been based on finding the basis of physical issues and illness. As a case manager, I monitor labs, trends in biological function and behavior to catch impending illness or significant medical issues. This requires frequent research into correlation of symptoms, age, immutable chronic issues, and modifiable factors which affect disease process.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. Nothing bothers me more than to be wrong about something because I didn't get the facts first. This has prompted me to over research and base my actions and beliefs on FACT and not on OPINION. It is my greatest hope to live in a just society and to do that requires me to be impartial and to listen to all sides of an issues while seeking knowledge on the matter and making the most informed, fair decision possible. You can't please all the people all the time, but you can feel good about a decision that was made with the best interest of as many people as possible in mind
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. In 2005, I was looking for my first house to buy and shopping from Dallas where I had lived in a variety of areas closer to downtown, most were untrendy, some high crime, all at the time were affordable. None of those areas are now affordable. I love diversity and when I attempted to find a home here, the realtor refused to entertain the idea of me living anywhere but far suburbs west of I-35 that were highly unappealing to me. A gay friend from Dallas called on a gay friend in Austin and he found the home I live in to this day just off East Riverside. This community is going through tremendous change and I have experienced that change from the aspect of a home owner and a person who has done pediatric home care and adult home health all over the east side. I listened and talked to young, mostly Hispanic families and older black and Hispanic adults about what affects them; their fears, their needs, their anxiety with the rising rents and taxes; their worry about losing their homes. As a single income home owner with finite time left to work full time, these issues affect me, also. I love the east side funky vibe, its beautiful murals, its wonderful ethnic shops and restaurants. I want to preserve and protect the city's beautiful parks and natural areas and keep them accessible to everyone. I want to see city resources equitably and effectively used and our beautiful waterways remain clean and safe. We have to look at trends that support both subtle and overt racism and the flight of families to outer cities for affordable housing. Without facing these issues, we lose a large part of our diversity and endanger the survival of our public schools. We need a city with children of all races and mixtures of ethnicity growing and thriving well; we need a diverse workforce to attract modern, forward thinking businesses to our area
Please provide your employment history. As a registered nurse, I have specific training in research, sensitivity to racial and ethnic differences, and in making sound evidence-based decisions. I spent over 10 years working in the community, both in my east side area and all over Austin and its surrounding communities. My clients included wealthy older people out west with the best insurance you can buy, families on Medicaid who had infants born with serious medical issues that could barely put food on the table, and every type of person in between. For the last two years, I have worked for the State of Texas as a Case Manager and experienced bureaucracy at a whole new level. In order to be effective at my job (no matter what job that has been) I have to have genuine compassion and excellent listening skills. I have to be able to explain difficult things that people do not want to hear in a way they can understand and assimilate the information. I have to firm, yet kind; I have to listen to people yell, whine, argue, manipulate, and not lose my head. I have to sit calmly and keep a poker face when I would rather verbally slice someone. It's a well-practiced art forged over 43 years of practice.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. For many years, I have wanted to do something constructive for my city and my community. Austin is losing its unique qualities that make it one of the best cities in the country. The funky cool vibe is getting crushed in a rapidly growing populous and increasing clashes with State ideology. I do not want us to continue in a holding pattern with policies due to squabbling and infighting with city leaders. I want to see districts get drawn to give the most fair representation, the most equitable use of resources, and the least chance of impasse.
