Please describe your relevant analytical skills. I am trained as a social work researcher and have used analytical skills throughout my career. I believe those skills would apply to investigating and understanding the demographics of Austin and putting together a fair plan for districting.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. I believe that all residents of the city have the right to have their voices heard and to be represented in a meaningful way in the process of government. When we have a representative government, the ability to be heard is directly tied to a fair drawing of district lines so that no one group has a district advantage or disadvantage. I believe I can do this.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. I live in north Austin near Braker and Lamar. This area is filled with a mix of people, races and cultures, long term residents and new arrivals, a variety of income levels: a microcosm of Austin. I believe that this mix contributes to our strength as a city. I would hope to support it.
Please provide your employment history. 2000-2008 University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Belton, TX. Chair, Dept. of Social Work, Sociology and Criminal Justice. 1990-2008 University of Central Texas, Killeen, TX. Field Coordinator and Associate Professor of Social Work. Both of these positions have allowed me to work with a diverse group of students. I have prior experience as a practicing social worker, working with individuals and communities to enhance the well being of the population. More information and a more detailed resume is available if you would like to see it.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. This is my first foray into government or politics, so I have no knowledge or experience there. I am interested in a fair redistricting so that all citizens feel represented. I am a pretty fast learner and I am eager to do so.
