Please describe your relevant analytical skills. | As an educator/administrator I worked within diverse communities - ethnicity, level of education, income, and culture. I have worked with children and parents from age groups starting at 6 weeks old to under graduates in college. I have worked in the private and public sectors at the district, city, state and national levels. One of my strengths is to turn a situation from a downward spine, in the red, and below standards to a growing organization that is in the black budget wise and recognized for its quality and success. This is evident in turning a low performing school to a National Blue Ribbon School, taking an enterprise in the red at Eanes ISD and bringing it into a black financial status and assisting low performing school through professional development. |
Please describe your ability to be impartial. | I have hired many people to work with me in many capacities. I look for diversity - gender, level of expertise and education, and social status.I hired many gays and Blacks because they were qualified and brought new ideas and ways of addressing the issues and work. I had the only Vietnamese program in the district and housed many special education programs when I was a principal. As Ass't. Commissioner of Higher Ed. I worked with private and public colleges and university staff. I worked with affluent and under privileged communities. I spoke Spanish when necessary. |
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. | There is still a lone way to go in the City's diversity. BUT, much improvement and growth has happened since I first arrived in 1972. There are more women, people of color and sexual orientation. The fact that this commission is being constructed to guide the future of Austin is a great thing! |
Please provide your employment history. | I started as a bilingual teacher, instructional coordinator and assistant principal. I served as the AISD Communications Director when it was going through desegregation in the late 70's. I was assigned to a low performing school as principal. I worked hard in organizing, hiring the right staff and putting into place many procedures to turn the school around. It was recognized a a National Blue Ribbon School. I later moved to El Paso and worked with 12 school districts and their administrator in Region 19 as the Director of Administrative Leadership. During this time I was completing my PH.D. at The University of Texas. I returned to Austin as Ass't Commissioner for Higher Education from which I retired. I was bored at home and felt I still had much more to offer, so I worked at Eanes as the Community Education Director until 2016. |
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. | I was appointed to the StateBoard of Educator Certification. I served at the national level for the National Blue Ribbon Program. I was recognized by my peers in 1997 as Administrator of the Year. The Texas Education Agency recognized my school as an instructional outstanding school for low income students. |
