Please describe your relevant analytical skills. Before I retired, I was a public school administrator in 3 ISD's in Texas, including Austin ISD. As an Area Superintendent in Austin and El Paso ISD's, I supervised over 20 schools. This involved educational planning, establishing budgets and evaluating the principals, among many other responsibilities.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. Having served over 30 years in public schools, I was recognized for many accomplishments by teacher groups, my school districts and more importantly, the communities that I served. I have always tried to be honest and dealt with all people equally.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. After proving myself as a school principal, I was selected as the first Hispanic to principal at a majority Anglo school and served there for 5 years. I have tried to participate in different ways throughout my years here in Austin. In the last ten years, since I retired, I have served on different committees at the University of Texas, have served on the "Grand Jury" twice in Travis County and served two years as president of my HOA in downtown Austin.
Please provide your employment history. I was a teacher here in Austin at both the elementary and secondary levels, an asst. principal, a principal at 3 different schools and an area superintendent. As a principal in Montapolis for 9 years, I worked in a community where the boundaries between Austin and Del Valle ISD's are difficult to distinguish (boundaries). As an area superintendent, I dealt with school transfers (boundaries) many times. My area budget for 27 schools in the El Paso ISD was 53 million dollars a year. Each school had to justify their budget to me before we took them forward to the Board of Trustees.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. As a retired senior, I have not participated or have gotten involved with a much lately. I play golf at Onion Creek, where I live, twice a week. I am healthy and stay active each day. I'm ready to start using my mind more analytically and working with others. I care about Austin's future. and would be ready to serve.
