Please describe your relevant analytical skills. As someone who has studied applied physics and mathematics (including statistics) throughout high school and college in pursuit of a career in engineering, I regularly need to analyze real-world problems and pick the best of several possible solutions.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. I am concerned about the practice of elected officials from certain political parties, or other individuals affiliated with those parties, drawing voting districts that will be favorable to their re-election, rather than ensuring that the entire population is well-represented. I am not affiliated with any political parties, government officials, or candidates, and if I were selected to be on the commission my goal would be to help create districts that will give everyone in the Austin area representation, without concern for whether new districts help incumbents or challengers in upcoming elections.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. I have been fortunate to grow up and pursue higher education in Austin. This city hosts the vibrant intersection of many different cultures, with Latin American, rural Texan, metropolitan US, and Asian American populations living together. However, having lived here for over a decade, it is also clear to me that Austin is not free of racial issues and tensions. The most obvious example of this is the unofficial segregation of much of the Hispanic population to the East of I-35, whereas the White (and Asian) population tends to live on the West side. These kinds of divisions are easily abused by gerrymanderers, as is clearly demonstrated by our infamous 35th congressional district.
Please provide your employment history. I have worked as a counselor at UT Austin's "First Bytes" program (a free programming camp for girls, especially those who have had limited extra-curricular opportunities), as a volunteer English teacher in Taiwan, a cashier and "sandwich artist" at a Which Wich restaurant, and as a student employee at the UT Austin Mechanical Engineering machine shop. My diverse working experience demonstrates my ability to quickly learn new skills and adapt to various environments, and at all of these positions I worked with and considered the needs of people from many different backgrounds.
