Please describe your relevant analytical skills. My professional real estate career demanded analysis of relevant financial and fact bearing information. My public services, listed below, were in bodies where a great deal of conflicting information was presented to be analyzed resulting in decisions affecting my fellow citizens lives. I took my responsibilities to heart and always tried to live up to the impartial standards of the job.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. I served six years as a member of the Travis County Appraisal Review Board, and was Chairman of the ARB in 2001. I was a Special Commissioner for Condemnation Hearings appointed by Judge Guy Herman for nearly twenty years. I served as a Travis County Grand Jury member for a full term. All of these positions required impartiality, listening to testimony from opposite perspectives, and rendering judgement based on the evidence presented.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. Having been an Austin resident since childhood in the 1950s, I have seen our city go from small town to megalopolis. I have witnessed the effects of actual segregation and de facto-segregation In our community. We have made enormous strides in the integration of all our diverse communities, and still have many hurdles to cross, as recent events will attest. We are a city where the majority of the citizens are non-white. We have economic disparities that must be addressed. I have a good base of knowledge of our city. A good perspective of Austin’s demographics and geography that will enable me to be a good choice for this commission.
Please provide your employment history. I became a real estate broker selling homes in 1970, and evolved into the commercial side of the field. I retired in the early 2000s. During hard times I had various jobs to supplement my family’s income; I worked part time as a cook at the Shoreline restaurant for a year; I owned the Cloak Room bar for three years; I worked at the Courtyard Tennis Club managing their food and beverage area, all the while doing my real estate business. I’m a good listener. I respect the diverse opinions offered by those with views different from my own. I work well with large groups of individuals, all with different backgrounds, personalities, and goals. My diverse job experiences gave me good insight of what makes Austin tick and, hopefully, a good choice for this commission.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. I’m an Austinite. I’ve been here for over sixty educational years, and have loved watching it turn into the vibrant, dynamic, and wonderful city that it is today. In small ways, I’ve tried to do my part. We need to insure that all of our citizens have an equal opportunity to enjoy the best that we have to offer. All areas of the City need good representation, and I hope I can play a role in making that happen.
