Please describe your relevant analytical skills. I can analyze people, situations and events in a purposefully objective and non-partisan way. People do not act alone but in concert at their most effective. I understand that the whole is often greater than the sum of its parts, and that each of those parts is critical to the whole. I appreciate the importance of statistical graphs and measures, and consider them essential for understanding facts and their significance. In my educational career, I regularly analyzed systems, curricula, and instructional methods for their effectiveness and relevance, and subsequently made decisions based on those analyses as means of achieving desired outcomes.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. My goal is to act in a fair, honest and forthright manner with everyone. While I do not claim perfection, I strive always to be anti-racist, open and respectful of all people, their opinions, and their heart-felt beliefs. The fundamental human rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are guiding principles goals I work diligently to enhance in every human interaction. Friends, colleagues, and casual acquaintances have thanked me for my willingness to embrace them as and for whom they are.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. My wife and I concluded upon moving to Austin twelve years ago that this is the best and most dynamic city in which we have ever lived. As natives of the St. Louis area and sometime residents of six states and one African country, we have found that Austin offers us greater diversity and more options than we have experienced anywhere else. We find the population extremely diverse in its racial, ethnic, economic, educational and stratified social makeup; the educational, recreational and socializing options expansive; and the physical environment with its parks, gardens, wild life refuges, rivers and lakes, unique geographical features and man-made infrastructure endlessly fascinating and inviting.
Please provide your employment history. 1964-66 English and Latin teacher, West Ladue Junior High School, Ladue, MO (suburb of St. Louis) 1966-67 English teacher, Azania Secondary School for Boys, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, East Africa (while serving as US Peace Corps volunteer) First-hand real-life experience living and working as a minority person in another cultural/ racial/ethnic/linguistic/economic community. 1967-68 English Instructor, Winona State University, Winona, MN 1968-70 PhD student and graduate teaching assistant in English, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS 1970-75 English Instructor, Washburn University, Topeka, KS 1975-98 Study Skills Center Director, English Instructor, Dean of Community Outreach Services, Personnel (HR) Director, Executive Assistant to the President, Dean of Instruction (chief academic officer), Garden City Community College, Garden City, KS 1998-2003 Dean of Academic Services, Executive Vice President, Northeastern Junior College, Sterling, CO 2003-08 Grants Director, Associate Vice President for Academics, Director of Institutional Effectiveness (college director of ongoing institutional accreditation through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools to maintain and enhance college's required national accreditation status), NorthWest Arkansas Community College, Bentonville, AR
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. I will bring experience and an enthusiastic passion for honesty, equity, and impartiality to the important task of redrawing Austin City Council voting districts. I understand the imperative for geographic and demographic parity of representation on the Council, and will work diligently to achieve this redistricting outcome so every voter has equal opportunity and access.
