Please describe your relevant analytical skills. I bring deep sub-textual reading skills to any proposals, as well as an adept and rigorous eye to the use of language and it's potential for interpretation vs intention. I also have a unique point of view since I have worked in various capacities for the Food & Beverage/Hospitality community in Austin for the past 8 years and understand the ramifications that voting districts have on lower-income/tip-dependent wage workers who are not only the driving force of our local tourism sector but a thoroughly underrepresented demographic that our city depends on.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. I'm less worried about who is right and more concerned with enacting what's right. I self-describe as independent since my collegiate education was focused on critical thinking and sub-textual analysis of media, so I'm not influenced by talking points or slogans and would rather read through the proposals to come to my own conclusions. Compromise is inevitable in power brokering, but that doesn't forestall the possibility for action and accountability when those decisions are written into law. I believe accountability should be the first priority as well as principle for elected offices.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. Austin is the rare Texas city that actually is composed of neighborhoods instead of cookie-cutter developments. I live in SE Austin, and love the proximity to downtown and the airport that affords, as well as McKinney Falls and Onion Creek being in my backyard for that nature fix we all sometimes need. Ironically enough, MoPac is one of my favorite drives in the city since it skirts the start of the hill country and offer's a glimpse at Austin's potential to marry common sense (and ad-free) transit corridors with high-tech development and graceful older neighborhoods. East Austin is a gem of contemporary new-urbanism but we must be careful to preserve the few pockets of cultural heritage that POC have preserved there over the past decade; we should not overwrite their presence in the area, and the Carver Branch Library is a shining example of local cultural dynamism that Austin needs more of.
Please provide your employment history. HF Collection (2019-Present) - Project coordinator: Managing multiple concurrent projects for Hospitality FF&E, working with multi-million dollar budgets. The Austin Shaker (2019) - Manager; construction of 2nd location of expanding local business; retail sales. The Line Hotel (2018) - Lead Bartender for new flagship restaurant in perhaps the most visible downtown hotel redevelopment in recent years; experience Honing Front-of-House SOP’s for beverage program through continual training for many employees that are recent transplants. Firehouse Lounge (2012-2017) - General manager; GM for 3 years, bartender before that; Grew gross annual revenue nearly 50% in 2 years as GM through operational efficiency improvements, Curating a positive work environment with long-time staff retention.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. I am definitely representative of Austin's tremendous growth over the past 10 years, one of those very "250 people a day are moving here" individuals. I don't seek to supplant those voices representative of "old Austin," but only to supplement them from the perspective of their newer neighbors.
