Please describe your relevant analytical skills. The basis for my analytical skills comes from innate analytical abilities channeled into a Bachelors degree in Computer Science from the University of Texas, work as a Systems Analyst for the State of TX, and 22 years of technical and architectural work at IBM. I've used Agile/Kanban methodologies in formal team settings to efficiently progress work items.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. Fairness is ingrained in my personality and is something I have and always will stand up for. I believe that fairness is the most important component of impartiality. Achieving impartiality requires an ability to truly listen, to recognize and set aside bias in one's self and others, and focus on the merit of each argument. I have this ability.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. My family arrived in Austin in 1970 as the dependent son of a black Air Force Sargent. In the military everyone talked the same, dressed the same, and performed similar work. Austin was my first true exposure to non-DOD American school, home, and culture. My shock at the varying speech, colloquialisms, and customs grew into the appreciation I hold today for the differences and perspectives that make this city great. I've also lived in different areas of the city - East Austin, Bergstrom AFB, the UT Campus, and South and SW Austin. I've watched growth change the city and diminish the size and voice of black and brown population. We should strive to preserve these and other voices in representing Austin values.
Please provide your employment history. 1997 – June 2020 Technical & Sales Roles IBM 1996 - 1997 Applications Developer Envision Inc., St. Louis 1994 - 1996 Telecommunications Manager Avalon Software, Tucson 1989 - 1993 Systems Analyst Texas State Library & Archives, Austin My work at IBM involved technical requirements gathering, solution design, technical solution presentation, and project management. Separately, I've moderated Austin/Travis County candidate forums - the latest (just last month) for Travis County DA, I was chosen because I was perceived as impartial.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. I have strong ties to Austin and just recently retired. I offer my time, skills, and an energetic desire to become more involved in the community to hopefully improve the well-being of all our citizens.
