Please describe your relevant analytical skills. I have used US Census and American Community Survey data in professional research on environmental equity and on public health. I have programming skills in SAS, R, and Python for accessing, analyzing, and mapping data.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. I have been elected to chair three city boards on which I served, based in large part on my ability to be fair. As a chair person, I have made requests to the city council to diversify the boards on two occasions, once when only one of nine was a women, and once when 12 of 15 appointments had been made to a new board and no Black members had been appointed.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. As mentioned above, I have supported diversity on city boards on which I served. I supported single member districts because they provided more government access to underrepresented communities. I serve on an advisory panel for Neighborhood Housing & Community Development to plan for affordable housing around the city, and I serve on a subcommittee for the nonprofit HousingWorks to support more low-cost housing all over the city. My family generally shops at locally owned businesses to deliberately support our community.
Please provide your employment history. 2005 – 2020 The University of Texas at Austin, Center for Energy and Environmental Resources, MC R7100, Bldg 133, 10100 Burnet Rd, Austin, TX 78758 Research Associate: I am responsible for conducting air pollution studies. I analyze data and report results to community groups, elected officials, and other researchers. 1993 – 2005 Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (formerly Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC)), PO Box 13087, Austin, TX 78711-3087 Manager, Monitoring Data Management & Analysis Section: I managed up to 24 scientists, programmers, and data managers handling pollution and meteorological data. Duties included preparing and delivering talks and reports on air pollution monitoring findings to professional and civic groups.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. In one of the above questions, I responded yes when asked about appointment to a "city office." My last city appointment ended in 2017 on the Land Development Code Advisory Group, but it was not officially dissolved until 2019. I am a very privileged white male and suspect you have many persons from this category applying. I believe we need more diversity on boards and commissions, and while serving on the Board & Commission Transition Task Force in 2014 had suggested that we track the residences of board & commission members to guarantee that they are as geographically diverse as the single member district city council. I will serve if chosen, but I strongly believe we need to diversify boards & commissions.
