Please describe your relevant analytical skills. I have experience conducting quantitative and qualitative research and currently manage several online assessments. I coordinate the full life cycle from creating survey questions to analyzing data to presenting and disseminating the results to various audiences. I enjoy applying my intuition and human-centered approach to logical and data-driven challenges. I strongly believe that a balance of feelings and logic can and should exist.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. Confidentiality and impartiality have been critical for success in my professional career in higher education. As a leadership coach, it is my duty to be neutral - detached from being personally involved with my clients. I currently coach leaders and individual contributors on the same team without being partial to either. I manage Dell Med’s 360 feedback process which requires a large amount of impartiality as a coach. I work closely with individuals who are using their feedback and creating development plans. Reading admissions applications and conducting admissions interviews also necessitate an awareness of any bias I could bring to the task and a constant checking of myself to confirm I am being as fair as possible. Impartiality is a constant practice and an opportunity to recuse oneself if a potential conflict of interest is possible. I have personally removed myself from a medical school student interview because I had known the student from other engagements on campus. I will strive to be as impartial as possible and will hold myself and others accountable.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. As a native Austinite, I have had nearly 40 years to explore, grow with, and learn from my city, the people who live here, and the amazing spaces we have. Through many volunteering efforts over the years, I’ve enjoyed our many parks participating in the annual It’s My Park Day clean ups, as well as visiting our wonderful range of park spaces from trail running at Walnut Creek to discovering new playgrounds with my family. My husband, daughter, and I can often be found wading in the waters at Bull Creek, jumping into Barton Springs, and taking peaceful walks at Mayfield Park. I personally see it as my mission to know my hometown and all of the beautiful spaces it has. I feel fortunate that we have so much greenspace and it’s been a real joy as a parent to share this beautiful resource with my daughter. Through volunteering with the Jeremiah Program as a life skills facilitator, I have been able to connect with single mothers finishing up their college education and creating better lives for themselves and their children. I value all members of the Austin community and seek out opportunities to meet and connect with others. Working in admissions at UT Austin for many years, it was easy to talk with prospective students and families about Austin, what makes it special and how to keep discovering new restaurants, parks, and small businesses. Most of my childhood and now again as an adult, I live in Windsor Park. Growing up here, I knew the airport being just down the street and now to enjoy all that Mueller has to offer is both wonderful and weird. Living in Austin my whole life, including college gives me a perspective many of my friends and colleagues don’t have. It can be both exciting and sad to live through many changes that have come to our city. I hope to continue to find ways to give back and support our city as much as I can.
Please provide your employment history. I have worked at The University of Texas full time since 2003. I’ve held various roles ranging from: Admissions Counselor, Admissions Volunteer Coordinator, Visitor Center Director, Assistant Director for Visitor Services, and Assistant Director for Student Life and Special Projects in the School of Nursing, and currently Project Manager for Leadership Development and Assessment and Leadership Coach at the Dell Medical School. I have extensive supervisory and management experience, training, event planning, volunteer coordination, and team building skills. What I believe sets me apart is my attention to mindful communication and my efficient work ethic. I’ve done graduate research in mindful email practices in the work place and care very much for not just the message but the delivery, intent, and style of the message. I know and demonstrate how important communication is in any aspect of a team or organization.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. My core values are gratitude, optimism, and connection. I try very hard not to take anything for granted and to appreciate small things and moments. Optimism helps me manage life. I can always find something that is positive and I am frequently told I’m an energetic and encouraging person to be around. Connection – yes, I like to connect with others, I am not shy or nervous with people. But, really I view my value of connection as an application of using what I know and feel to connect with understanding others and finding new opportunities. Practicing awareness allows me to live these three values every day. I am easy to work with. I’m dependable, flexible, understanding, and collaborative. A large part of my coaching practice and daily living is mindfulness and practicing emotional intelligence. I pledge to be mindful and emotionally intelligent in this redistricting process. In my time at Dell Med, I have been fortunate to attend racial equity trainings, implicit bias trainings, and mental health first aid trainings. I am constantly recognizing how much I don’t know – about our community’s history and needs. I see this as an opportunity to learn, grow, and be the change I want to see around me. Seeking out understanding and ways that I can help is part of who I am and I see engagement with the redistricting process as an ultimate opportunity to do that. Redrawing our boundaries is a huge feat that I am committed to take on and give appropriate time and energy to. I care deeply about my city and helping those around me. I see this an amazing opportunity to serve my community and learn so much in the process.
