Please describe your relevant analytical skills. As an accountant and credit union examiner, I have been analytical for many years. As a company accountant, I had to analyze and evaluate the overall financial condition of the company for which I worked. As a credit union examiner/regulator for 27 years, I was constantly analyzing the financial conditions of over 400 credit unions in the State of Texas. I would have to make decisions regarding Administrative Actions against a credit union based on my analysis. That analysis included evaluating the ability of management to overcome the deficiencies identified during an examination. I will be able to look at population numbers and make an accurate and informed analysis of the makeup of each district based on my experience.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. During my lifetime, I have been selected to be on five juries. Two in Fulton County, Georgia were misdemeanor cases, one in Dallas County was a civil case, and in Williamson County one case was a criminal case and the other was a civil case. I believe that attorney's selected me because of my work background as a credit union regulator and they felt that I would be impartial. As a credit union examiner/regulator you have to gather facts and data, and then make an impartial assessment of that credit union. I worked for 27 with the agency and evaluated many credit union situations during my tenure.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. Since Austin has always been a university town, it has attracted diverse cultures who came here to study, and then decided to stay! In addition, the Hispanic population has significantly increased over the years. The African-American community has become more active and vocal in city affairs. The Asian community has expanded as a result of the high tech industry in our area. It has been good for our kids and grandkids to have friends from each of these cultures. For many years I-35 has been a dividing issue in Austin. Highway engineers many years ago decided to build it right through the middle of town, and while that has advantages, it physically split the Hispanics and Blacks from the Whites. It was the proverbial "other side of the tracks" and was a negative for many years. I like to believe we have overcome that attitude and look past any geographic barriers. I also believe that group of people always took pride in their homes and schools, and it is very evident today.
Please provide your employment history. During my early years while attending college, I worked part-time for a large corporation that produced plastic jars and containers. I learned that detail and accuracy are important when reporting production, inventory and shipping. That detail and accuracy has stayed with me throughout my career as a credit union examiner/regulator and as a consultant for the past 17 years. As a credit union examiner, I had to prepare financial statements, evaluate key operating ratios, review the quality of the loan and investment portfolios, and make an assessment of management, both the president and the board of directors. As a credit union consultant, I have worked with over 40 credit unions on such projects as field of membership applications, financial analysis, lending policies, and other aspects of credit union operations. I believe that my work skills dovetail with those needed to serve on this commission. Financial analysis, management analysis, impartiality, and openness to other views are skills that I have that would be valuable to this commission.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. I believe that older applicants have had many life experiences that provide them with more wisdom than younger applicants. Though some believe that older folks are "set in their ways", many of us in that category still believe that we can contribute to the well-being of our city. Redistricting is a big chore that does not need to be politicized. I believe that my life experiences, my work experience and my desire to serve the City of Austin makes me a "most qualified applicant" for appointment to this commission.
