Please describe your relevant analytical skills. My experience as a software quality assurance engineer has taught me much about analyzing problems. First, I like to identify the independent and dependent variables that define the problem. Next, I determine the relationship between these variables and create a list of variable values. Any scenarios that do not make sense are remove from the list. This exercise allows me to understand the problem and the variables that contribute to it in detail. Also, I can explore the problem using different variable values to understand the relationship between independent and dependent variables.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. I believe all decisions made by the commission should be based on objective criteria and not on race, religions or sexual orientation. If I am selected to serve on the commission I will do my best to be impartial to all groups at all times.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. I have lived in Austin since 1979 and have always enjoyed knowing and working with people of different nationalities, races, religions, political persuasions and orientations. I believe these diverse groups living in harmony for the most part give Austin its character.
Please provide your employment history. PRINCIPAL QA ENGINEER, ACTIAN CORPORATION, AUSTIN TEXAS 1995 – 2019 SOFTWARE ENGINEER, BRYT E SOFTWARE DESIGN, AUSTIN TEXAS 1993 – 1995 SOFTWARE ENGINEER, TIPS INCORPORATED 1990 – 1992 PC AND PC COMPONENT SALES, ALTEX COMPUTERS & ELECTR. 1989 – 1990 PRODUCTION MANAGER, WESTLAKE DATA CORPORATION 1988 – 1989 EDUCATION 1983 -1988 BATCHLOR OF SCIENCE, SOUTHWEST TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY Major in Computer Science SKILLS • Strong communication skills – I can relate openly and comfortably with diverse groups of people and I appreciate the unique needs of different audiences. • Focus on Results: Consistently pushing to achieve goals, even under high pressure and tough circumstances. • Managing Complexity – I work to understand and simplify complex, high volume, and often contradictory data to find the best solution for a problem. • Continuous Improvement – I strive to optimize and innovate my work processes by researching the most effective and efficient ways to get things done, with a focus on automation. • Working effectively with others – I try to build relationships and work collaboratively with others to meet team goals. • Skills Development – I actively seek ways to grow my skills and be challenged using online research, education and experimentation. • Debugging – I have experience setting up Procdump.exe to create and Windbg to analyze dump files. I am not an expert using Windbg but I can get the symbols loaded and usually find where the crash occurred and why. With this information I can enter a defect at the component level. I have also used MSVC to attach to a process and step through the code to find / reproduce problems. • Packet Tracing – I have used Wireshark to monitor connections between client and server machines to find issues and look at data in proprietary packets. Prior to Wireshark I used the older Intel tool to do similar things. • Problem Solving – An issue I worked on recently was dropped network connections from all client machines accessing data on a server machine. This problem seemed to happen randomly. I used Wireshark to monitor the packets to and from the server. I filtered the trace down to one client and the server machine and capture the disconnect event, but I could not determine what caused it. I needed to know what the last packets sent by the server and client were. This is not easy to do with the free version of Wireshark, so I created a little Python script that polls for an error status to be written to a log on the client machine. If the error status is seen the script calls taskkill.exe to terminate Wireshark immediately. This stops Wireshark from logging any additional packets. With this script in place I found the server was sending a large proprietary SRB packet with an invalid packet length. With this information the communications developer was able to fix the problem. COMPETENCIES • Working knowledge of Windows, Linux platforms. • Working knowledge of VMware vSphere 6x. • Proficient programming in C/C++, Java, Python and Perl. • Training and mentoring team members. • Planning projects using Agile methodology • Managing team members at the project level. ACTIVITIES I enjoy riding dirt bikes, bicycling, water sports and exercising at the gym. I also volunteer time at the Caritas of Austin Community Kitchen.
