Please describe your relevant analytical skills. I am the director of strategy and operations for a major technology company. With experience as a lawyer, technical consultant, and technical writer, in addition to my current professional role as a strategic planner for a team with a $200m budget, I will bring a keen sense of data analytics to the commission
Please describe your ability to be impartial. As a lawyer, I am trained to understand multiple viewpoints and help bring people together towards a common goal. I do this every day in my job, and every day at home with my 3 young kids. The commission shares a common goal in drawing equitable districts to ensure the citizens of our city are fairly represented and I hope that fellow chosen applicants are committed to that end goal.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. The city of austin has changed dramatically since I lived here as a student, now nearly 20 years ago. Even in the last five, and even the last 2 years. With the rapid influx of new residents, the demographics and socioeconomic status of residents has evolved across all neighborhoods with dramatic effect on equitable factors like housing prices and affordability. Watching this evolution has driven me to want to help the city evolve as its residents change - to adapt to make it more fair, more equitable to live in, and in the current moment, consider what can be done to help Austin look forward while considering how it got here.
Please provide your employment history. - My current role is director of strategy and operations, where my responsibility is to define my team's plan as we grow into the next 5-10 years of our business. This is a big, global role where I have to consider a massive variety of factors and consolidate a wealth of data - then make an argument in favor of my recommendations. I've been in this role for 2 years - Prior to this, I was leading a europe-wide team of strategic problem-solvers whose main role was to mediate issues between our customers and internal teams. We solved hard problems by considering the viewpoints, understanding our options, and recommending an action to take. We looked at lessons from previous scenarios and determined the best path forward, then revisited these lessons. These skills are directly translatable to a role on the commission.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. I know I don't qualify for the timing requirements. However, I have been overseas for the last 7 years and living in a land where I didn't speak the language - and therefore being unable to participate in helping drive the cities forward - was incredibly frustrating when I found issues that I could help resolve. I moved back to help make positive change where I lived. I can make a difference here and bring a fresh viewpoint to the commission. It is worth considering exceptions to the applications given the rapid change in Austin over the recent years - including considering my application for this role
