Please describe your relevant analytical skills. I am an effective collaborator, problem solver, detailed, organized, I seek to understand before I am understood, creative thinker, comfortable speaking in public, a motivator, and compassionate, servant leader. I love researching, gathering data and bringing people together. I prioritize responsibilities and focus on the most important to complete a task.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. Realtors adhere to a Code of Ethics. Ethical leaders are fair, principled and genuinely concerned for all. Emotions run high when making decisions on things we are passionate about. I have completed several leadership classes and I am a graduate of the Texas Realtors Leadership Program where I learned to value a diverse team, to step back and look at the bigger picture, to asked others for weigh in, rely on data, consider the benefits of the other choices, to remove myself from the equation and to always wait 24 hours before making a decision. All have proved valuable when faced with making decisions for 13,000 members where decisions should be based on objective criteria, rather than bias, the benefit of a few or for improper reasons.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. Everyone should read "The Geography of Opportunity in Austin and How it is Changing" this study was well done and speaks to our diverse city. Austin is a multicultural city. We have an identifiable reputation. The leadership of our city seeks to understand the diversity of our communities. They invite input from people of different backgrounds, attempt to bring diverse groups together and they have created a welcoming environment. I believe it is important to be aware of unconscious bias. It is important for the city leadership to continually communicate the importance of managing bias. Building awareness is first step towards real change.
Please provide your employment history. I have been in the real estate industry in one facet or another since 1986. My husband and I own and operate John Horton Realty. I have a successful real estate practice covering all areas of Austin. I am the incoming President for the Austin Board of Realtors serving 13,000 members, Director for the Texas Realtors Association and I serve on a MUD Board. I have lived, worked and played in District 10 for over 22 years. I want to serve our community and I would be honored to serve the redistricting commission.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. I am qualified, I have the skill set, the ability and I understand how our current 10 districts work. I am a member of the ABoR Legislative Management Team during the past 8 years I have met and interviewed the district candidates, participated in elections, helped the Mayor with solving the Veteran Homeless problem, dedicated time to our homeless issues, and met with City Council Leaders to discuss local Real Estate Issues and I am an advocate for the City of Austin.
