Please describe your relevant analytical skills. I'm training in conducting statistical analysis using Excel and SAS. Prior to becoming a project manager, I was a software developer. I'm used to working with large data sets. Both making sense of them and extracting relevant conclusions. I don't think that being analytical on its own is very valuable - if you can't communicate what you've analyzed well to others (Both technical and nontechnical people), then you aren't really doing anything valuable.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. I am by nature impartial, both personally and professionally. I've received training in conflict mediation and understand that the public trust is something that deserves respect. Communities are a sacred thing, and we should do what we can to promote them. While I love this city, I have no special attachment to any districts or neighborhoods - my goal is promoting the prosperity of our city and our people in the most equitable way possible.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. Austin is a city with a deep and complicated racial history, as the recent protests and civil unrest have illustrated. It's abundantly clear in talking to people that Austinites take pride in our diversity, but the sometimes uncomfortable facts - like that Austin is one of the most segregated cities in the nation - point to a disconnect. Once we start having those uncomfortable conversations and accepting those sometimes disgusting realities, we can begin to build a more whole and equitable city. Geographically, we're blessed. The Hill Country boasts a beautiful diversity of wildlife and geological features that deserve protection and proper management.
