Please describe your relevant analytical skills. In my job, I work with large public datasets to analyze trends, identify resource gaps and opportunities, and formulate programmatic and policy recommendations. This often entails matching data across multiple sources to arrive at a more holistic view of the problem and potential solutions (e.g., matching data across the Homeless Management Information System, Travis County Sherriff's Office, and local healthcare information exchange to better understand patterns of jail and health care utilization for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness). I hold an MBA and am experienced in financial modeling and statistical analysis. I also have a Master's Degree in Social Anthropology and am skilled at integrating qualitative data (interviews, focus groups, etc.) with quantitative data analysis.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. Being impartial entails recognizing how your own lived experience leads to bias in your thinking. It entails stepping outside of your own worldview and approaching problems and solutions from the perspective of others. It also entails creating space to listen to and consider opposing viewpoints. I have experience practicing all these skills in both my personal and professional life.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. Since moving to Austin in 2013, I have loved exploring and learning about the many different neighborhoods and communities this city has to offer. Initially my Austin experience was mostly confined to the community at UT, where I attended grad school. Since then, I have lived in three different neighborhoods, worked with nonprofits serving all corners of the city, and launched a businesses on the historic east 12th street corridor. I have learned about the top ten demographic trends in Austin (such as the declining African-American share of the city's population growth and the rapid increase in Asian representation) from a combination of first-hand experience and participation in programs such as Leadership Austin.
Please provide your employment history. 2016-present: Director, Social Finance (Associate Director from 2016-2018) Social Finance is a national nonprofit organization that partners with governments, nonprofits, and private funders to improve the accountability and impact of public spending via the development of outcomes-based financing strategies. 2015-2016: Co-Founder of Urban Co-Lab, a co-working community in east Austin for diverse entrepreneurs 2013-2015: Full-Time MBA Student at McCombs School of Business, UT 2008-2013: Program Associate, Plan International (Washington, DC and Port-au-Prince, Haiti): Oversaw implementation of internatonal aid programs in Africa and Haiti
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. Based on my understanding of the role the Commission will play, the ability to communicate effectively with the public may be as important as the analytical skills required. I can offer support in this area as a strong communicator, meeting facilitator, and public speaker.
