Please describe your relevant analytical skills. I teach geography, urban sprawl, gerrymandering, gentrification, and spatial reasoning at Crockett HS. I am able to create and manipulate maps using ArcGIS.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. My job as a teacher involves writing and using rubrics to evaluate student work in a fair and impartial way. We teachers strive to serve all of our families no matter what part of town they live in. Conversations around equity and fair representation are part of every social studies teacher’s toolkit.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. Being a teacher in Austin for 15 years, I’ve seen the different neighborhoods that have developed around our rapidly changing housing market. I’ve seen families move farther and farther out to afford a house, and I know firsthand the inequality of resources that results depending on which side of I-35 one lives on. I’ve taught at schools on both sides and met incredible kids from across our city. And it has been my privilege to speak on behalf of schools and students that have been on the losing end of shrinking budgets and bad decisions. Unfortunately our city’s history is one of white supremacy and patterns of unfair discrimination against black and brown residents. We have a chance to create a city council map that lives up to our imaginations as a diverse, creative, and tolerant urban space.
Please provide your employment history. I’ve been a secondary social studies teacher for 23 years, 16 of those in Austin. My job explicitly involves communicating with people from all around our community, and helping students understand the patterns that have shaped our civic institutions.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. Let’s get it right. The future depends on it.
