Please describe your relevant analytical skills. For this commission to successfully carry out its mission, its analytical process must include effective communication and valid data analysis. My undergraduate degree in Communication as well as years of practice as a professional mediator will help me communicate with fellow commission members and receive communication from the public. My years of work at the Texas Legislature and Master of Public Administration degree have prepared me for the data analysis aspect of the commission.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. One of my first jobs in the Texas Legislature was working for the Secretary of the Senate. While I was active in politics outside of work, at the legislature I worked for all of the members equally regardless of their political perspective or mine. It is critical for this commission to be able to weigh many interests and make decisions without favor based on personal preferences and my background illustrates my ability to do that.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. Several years ago a study illustrated the depth of economic segregation in Austin and the negative impacts of such deep division. That factor added to geographic and other divisions of our community can only be adequately addressed by a city council as diverse as the community it represents. I see the public interaction portion of this commission's job as absolutely critical to the commission's ability to discern the best ways to draw districts from which those council members will be chosen.
Please provide your employment history. From 1993 to 2007 I worked in the Texas Legislature starting in Lt. Governor Bob Bullock's office and then in several roles ranging from the office of the Secretary of the Senate to work as a legislative aide for several legislators. My duties during that period included public speaking, research, constituent services, data analysis, and collaboration with diverse staff and legislators. After an Austin-requisite detour into the music industry managing artists and working on music licensing, I became a professional mediator and conduct mediations including divorce, child custody, insurance claims, and business dissolution. The combination of my work in the legislature and my skills as a mediator make me particularly suited to this role.
Please provide any other information you wish to be considered during the selection of the most qualified applicants for the Commission. In addition to my professional background, an important aspect of my perspective of the community is my years of volunteer work for the Travis County Sheriff's Victim Services Unit. While our response to victims is usually outside the city, it is usually services within the city to which we refer them and help connect them. The range of needs and services I have seen in that work has informed my perspective of the diversity and challenges within our community.
