Please describe your relevant analytical skills. I have formerly worked for over a decade in Service Order Management at Apple Inc. Our team was tasked with root-cause analysis on the database for global service operations. This required critical-thinking skills to develop and adapt processes to create and deploy procedures in a fast-paced data-driven environment to accomplish award-winning customer service and industry-first business goals.
Please describe your ability to be impartial. I have been honored to service the greater Austin area as a licensed Funeral Director for over six years. Following the ethical standards I am sworn to under that license, I strive to hold myself to the same standard of service to every member of my community in all my efforts. I have chosen to apply for this Commission specifically because it requires an inclusive impartiality.
Please describe your appreciation for the City of Austin's diverse demographics and geography. I must admit my parents moved to Austin from out of State when I was 2, so I am not a native Austinite. One of my earliest memories is of my father introducing me to his boss, Madalyn Murray O'Hair. She was known by many as 'The Most Hated Woman in America'. My family lived next door to local theatre star Kermit Fritz when I was young. I recall fondly when he invited us to see his performance as Mae West, resplendent in her couture as she toured Eeyore's Birthday in a Swan-shaped litter. I once met with former mayoral candidate Leslie Cochran at his pop-up campaign office at 517 E. 6th St. I did make a non-monetary donation in support of his campaign, and the establishment was called Casino El Camino then too. I helped the Austin City Limits photographer Scott Newton transition to digital in order to capture the Austin City Limits Music Festival where I supported his role as digital assistant in 2002 and 2003. From a background in Tech I developed an internationally acclaimed podcast called Dial-A-Stranger, and recall fondly in 2008 interviewing Red Wassenich who originally coined the phrase "Keep Austin Weird". I applied that background to record telephone interviews for my first-generation co-host as part of the research for her doctoral dissertation 'Stranger in a Strange Land: A study of the effect of foreignness on perceptions of Latinos' in 2014. The majority of my life I have resided east of IH-35, including my current home in Windsor Park since 2002. As a result I am aware that the City Council still strives to overcome challenges that stem from the historical segregation of Austin. In conclusion, I'd like to paraphrase a popular bumper sticker about Texas: My birth wasn't Weird, but I got Weird as soon as I could.
